Become a Citizen Journalist

If you would like to become a citizen journalist, follow the steps below.

After you read this page, you may be interested in learning how you can make money for being a citizen journalist.

Setting up your account:

  1. Register for a FREE publisher’s account.
  2. Check the email you used to register to get your password.
  3. Log into your account using the login screen on the left sidebar of any page on our site.
  4. After logging in, click the “My Profile” link.
  5. Scroll down to the very bottom of the page, and put in your new password.
  6. To complete the setup, you must HIT ENTER, while your cursor is in the “Type your new password again,” box.
  7. UPDATE: Due to spam, there are 2 more steps you must follow to gain access to posting articles on our site.
  8. After you have gotten a username and password, you will need to email me at taylorthompson@newsbythepeople.com with a 250+ word example article.
  9. If your article meets our Editorial Guidelines, we will upgrade your account to a citizen journalist’s account, and you will gain access to post articles on our site.

Submitting Articles:

  1. After you’ve changed your password, you will see a box that says “POSTS” in the left sidebar.
  2. Click “ADD NEW” to add a new post. (If “add new” isn’t available, click “POSTS” and “add new” will drop down.)
  3. As you’re writing your article, make sure it meets our Editorial Guidelines.
  4. A word count located in the bottom left hand corner of your writing box will show you how many words you’ve written.
  5. When you’re ready to submit your article, click the “SUBMIT FOR REVIEW” button, in the right sidebar.

Submission and Review Process:

  1. After you’ve submitted your article, it will be reviewed by our staff to see if it has met our Editorial Guidelines.
  2. Your article will be reviewed within 12 hours of submission, and usually, right away.

Your Article has been Declined: What Next?

  1. Go to the Edit Posts area of your account.
  2. If your article says “Pending” in bold, we have not yet reviewed your article.
  3. If you no longer have access to edit your article, then it  has been published.
  4. If your article says “FIX ERRORS,” hover over your article title, and click EDIT.
  5. Above your article, I will have written what must be fixed for article approval.
  6. Resubmit your article as many times as you’d like, until it’s approved.
