What is Sextortion? How Can It Be Prevented?
Sextortion is becoming extremely popular amongst teens around the world, but what is it, and how can it be prevented? The following information was obtained from Gather.com. (We all remember the Miley Cyrus photo scandals. This was an example of sexting, but what is sextortion?) Let us explain. See below photo!

‘Sextortion’ has been around for quite some time, but only recently was it really developed into an actual term. Here’s a basic example of how sextortion works: Let’s call the two involved in this story, Ashley and Bill. Bill asks Ashley to send him a provocative photo. Ashley sends Bill the photo. Bill is happy, but wants to see something even more provocative. Ashley declines Bill’s request for a more provocative photo. Bill then states that if Ashley doesn’t send him a more provocative photo, he will release her first sent photo to the public. Thus, the term ’sextortion.’
Thus far, a number of sextortion cases have been taking place around the world. Lawyer and child safety advocate, Parry Aftab recently commented on the issue, common amongst teens, “Kids are putting their head in the lion’s mouth every time they do this,” and we couldn’t agree more.
In recent cases, a man sextorted 50+ women. In another case, a man posed as a young woman and tricked other men into send him photos, via email or text. In each of these cases, the men involved received 18 and 15 years in prison.
Sextortion can easily be prevented, by simply not taking any provactive photos, videos, or other similar types of media. Once you take a provocative photo or video, it can easily be released into the public, and once that media hits the internet, it’s likely not coming off. Kids are commonly involved in Sextortion, because they don’t realize the consquences of sexting, and other forms of provocative photo and video shooting.
